Default CPU temp or Core temp? E6420 NOOB

Just got it up and running last, night, my first rig, no smoke no sparks!!!

I used PC Wizard 2006 to monitor my stuff.

I disabled the "speed step thingy" in the DS3's bios, and got my Freezer 7 at full blast. I'm just testing and getting used to it.

I get this for temperature (E6420)

Processor temp. 25 deg.cel.
Core 1 temp. 36
Core2 temp 36
Mobo (system) 44

No overclock yet and under PRIME 95 for 4 hours now.

My question is: when you folks OC your C2D's what CPU temp do you consider? Core or Processor?:help:

On my past system, with watercooling, i used to get 22c - 23c Idle and about 45c - 48c Full Orthos load and that was with my E6600 Oced to 3.6Ggz. I always use Coretemp to monitor temps of my CPU. But sometimes, i use Everest Ultimate because it shows GPUs temps too.

Those temps seems a big high to me with your Freezer 7 at full blast. But maybe it's because of summer and/or thermal compound you used ? Did you put some AS5 or something similar ?

BTW: Enjoy the build m8!

Here's a link to a collection of temp related threads and guides:

EVGA | Message Boards

Generally people say under full load, stay below 65 TCore (Tjunction) and 50 TCase. your 25 is TCase (measured at the chipset), and your 36 is TCore (or Tjunction as some people call it) measured inside the CPU- they're fine.

Thanks for the reply Patriote and MOD!,

I'm just using the regular issued thermal compound (mx-1 I think) already on the HSF. Arctic documents stated a 200 hours "curing" time ,I suppose I'll gain a tiny bit, maybe one degree.

If you find the temp a little high, well you know better than me.

I got an Armor jR case, with a 120mm exhaust fan right behind the Freezer 7 I supposed it would be a good setup. I'll change that 120 for a TRICOOL ,I'l probably get more airflow than the regular TT case fan. I'm also getting a ANTEC SPOTCOOL to cool RAM/Northbridge and back of 8800 GFX.

Your welcome

But i doubt that changing the back fan will give anything worth. But yeah, the fan will probably be better than the TT fans...lol

Next time you have to remove your Freezer, clean off the old thermal compound with alcohol or Artic clean, get yourself some AS5 and apply it. You should see a small difference.

I have a few af7's and on one of them i tried it with the supplied tim but quickly changed it to as5. I don't recall the temp diff but it was significant ... i was in the process of oc'ing either a 6320 or a x3210 ... can't remember which.

During testing/oc'ing i find that using orthos i am stable till ~ 70C and for stable 724 folding i like to see them no higher than low 60's or erros will happen.

If you have an average 6420, you should be able to run stable at ~ 400 fsb without much voltage bumping with your af7. I have a 6320 folding 724 on a ds3 at 450 fsb.
You may want to add some extra air cooling to the NB once you get the fsb into that range. SB can also get warm dpending on your case. I run all mine caseless.

I use coretemp 0.95 to monitor them in wxp and lm-sensors in linux (it only works on ubuntu 7.04 with the ds3's for me ... haven't tried other distros). Caretemp (and TAT i think) gives you individual core temps ... others i have tried only give a single cpu temp.

on asus mobo's i also run asus probe. I don't find the gigabyte tool very convenient. speedfan may work and seems to be consistent with the linux lm-sersors tool, but both of these consistently give lower quad core temps that coretemp does in windows - just a colibration issue I think, although i don't really trust most speedfan readings.

4 hours' worth of Prime and you have 36 Tcore? That's damn good. Apply so AS5 and it will be even better.

Congratz on your first rig!

Is that the temp during play, immediately afterwards, or after 5 minutes?

If it's load temps, those are pretty damn good. If they are idle temps it would depend on if you were OC'ing the system.

If those are the temps after 2-3 hours of playing Carbon, I would be happy.
Very.
