Urgent - Do I have Heat Issues? Please look

Problem solved- see my last post for details


I just built my new computer yesterday in an antec 900 case.

All fans are on HIGH ( x2 in front, x1 in rear, x1 top exhaust)

I am running an ASUS p5q3 Deluxe mobo with a Xeon e3110 chip. I applied a bit of the stock thermal compound (grain of rice sized) and spread it out with my finger inside a plastic baggy. It was a very thin, almost translucent, application. Then I installed my freezer 7 pro without a hitch. Some came off on the baggy.

I am using a program called Core Temp 0.99.3 to monitor the heat, because I wanted to be sure I set the freezer 7 correctly.

At idle, the temps read about 42-43 degrees per core. I downloaded prime95, because I heard it was a good program to make sure things were running the way they should be.

I started it up on default settings, watching my temps. Within about 20 seconds , my temps went from 40 degrees to 95 degrees (well, thats what the reader said). WOW! Is something totally wrong here or what?!

I shut off the program just in case those were the real tempuratures. I did NOT want to fry my new cpu.

SO, what should I do now?

I wanted to check other temp monitor software just in case this one is giving a false reading (oh, I sure hope so.. I dont want to root through my case again). What else can I do?

Hi- 95 is definitely too high, but there are a couple of thigns to consider- there is setting time for thermal compund so temps will drop a little over the coming week- also temp sesnors can be off and give inaccurate readings, and while prime 95 is a good stress tester, it puts a higher load on the CPU than just about anything you'll run in day to day use. That said, try another temp program like real temp just for kicks- see what it says under load bu tdon't run it too long if they're still 95. Then I'd try to reseat the heatsink- maybe use a little more compound this time and be very sure the pins are in the mobo right- they can be tricky and deceptive little buggers. Then try testing again.

To me that sounds like there's not enough thermal compound or one of the push-pins is loose. For thermal paste application, I just put a pea-sized dot, or a line corresponding to the actual die orientation, on the center of the CPU. Let the heatsink and heat spread out the compound for you. Also give the heatsink a slight twist left and right if you can once the push-pins are in. That should help remove any air bubbles.

DTS readings don't lie (at least not in full-load). TCase yes, but distance to TJMax never (in full-load).

OP did you touch Freezer fins/heatpies? At 95°C it should burn your finger. Literally.
I'd say to take a look at push-pins. I bet that one/two are loose.

As I type, I am running full out prime 95 again, with the highest temp hitting 64 degrees C, and my idle is 30 degrees.


It was a seating problem. its fixed now, thank you very much for the fast responses.
