Default i7 not much of an overclocker?

If this article is real, then I'm not too impressed with the overclocking capabilities of the nehalem.

They used 1.72V (alot higher than Intel's max allowable of 1.65) and an FSB of 200 and a 21X multi to get 4.20 on the Core i7 965 Extreme.

Doesn't seem very impressive considering it's basically a suicide run

Until it's fully released, take everything with a grain of salt ;)

However, I don't have big expectations about overclocking capabilities since it's the first time Intel integrated the memory controller on the die so there is bound to be some bumps in the overclocking road.

From all I've read, the i7 is not an enthusiast product, gonna beat everything else hands down out of the box, but there is not a lot of tweak room available.

Kinda makes it prime enthusiast product though doesn't it? Hunting for tweaks and exploring new technology. Instead of slapping a heat pipe cooler on a e8400 and setting your fsb at 400x10 like the millions of people before you.

Should be good news for AMD if it's true....

(I'll be due for a new platform next year.... :) ).

Its not exactly good news for AMD, and the unoverclockablity isnt that bad. Especially if the initial benchmarks are true (beating out QX9650 by 50%). Even out of box it will be owning all the other processors, so really it isnt too bad, and like squeetard said, atleast it puts a little bit of "art" back into overclocking, not just raming up your fsb, and increasing your voltage a bit....

Sure, but I doubt tweaking will get much more out of a proc than FSB/Mem and for me it's not as much about overall performance as it is about how much better performance I can squeeze out of a chip than it's rated for. If it's back to the "bad old days" of only being able to squeeze an extra 10% of performance out of a chip then most folks will quite simply not bother.

As has already been stated... this is all speculation ATM, but judging by the pricing we've seen, and these kinds of results WRT overclocking I think AMD will have a great year if their next platform overclocks well and can put out #s that will at least match the current C2D line.

It is rather odd not to have seen 'leaked' benches from a reliable source yet, given how long Conroe was in the wild prior to release.

If the rest of the screenshot holds any validity, that would be pretty promising for the non-extreme versions of the chip, since their base clock is only 133, and this shot shows it at 200.

If all these rumors are true then I am skipping the whole i7 and waiting for the 32nm die shrink. Plus I don't really need a faster CPU right now.

Same here, the day a game will run my Q6600 to it's full 100% all the time i'll think about it.

In the mean time, I still gotta fork big $$$ for GPU's tho...
