I have a HTPC and high def cable box connected to my plasma. I use the htpc to play 1080p rips. A bit of web sufing too, in fullscreen mode to prevent burn in.

Does your plasma have PC profiles that reduce the contrast to prevent burn-in? And are you, by any chance, running one of those pricey Pioneer units?
