My System Specs

Default Time for a New Case

My 6 year old Raven RV01 has served me well but I'm thinking I need to switch cases to free up some desktop space. I do keep the case on top of the desk rather than the floor. I think I may want to go minimalist this time around in aesthetics. A case that caught my eye recently in an email ad was Fractal Design Define R5. But I'm open to other looks too. Main things I'm looking for are tool-less HDD caddies, left-side window (so I can still see all the pretty lights and admire the thousands of spent dollars inside), front USB3 ports, lots of cooling options. I also did like the idea of the PSU located on the bottom of the case as in the Raven. Case will have to be shorter in length too if all the cables are from the back (RV01 they are from the top) to accommodate the clearance between case and wall. Everything in my system specs will be going back into the case. The only item I may also upgrade when I get a new case is the CPU cooler.

So, any 'cool' cases out there I should be considering? I've been out of the loop for the last 6+ years in this regard.

TIA!

You didn't mention your budget, it would be easier to make suggestions if we know what price range you're looking at.

Cool beans, SugarJ. Never heard of Phanteks before. Those are nice cases you linked. Also need to compare dimensions so I know if I'm actually going smaller in footprint or not.

Oh yes..budget. Hell, I bought the Raven at an absurd price way back when and considering tech is a passionate 'hobby' of mine I guess I could say upwards of $200/250 CDN I wouldn't blink an eye at. Optimum would be $100~$200. Of course I want a case without any PSU included.

The Enthoo Evolv case is really tempting. Footprint is good and I like the reviews I've read and price is okay with me. Only one drawback for me and that's a lack of front 5.25" bays for optical drive(s). Yes, I know it's 2016 and who needs them but I still do. I still buy physical music CDs and rip them for Sonos and portable audio players. I could use an external optical drive if need be I suppose. The Evolv will be on my 'shortlist' while I investigate other options.

This is the route I've gone for exactly the same reason.

VANTEC ST-530S3-BK Aluminum 5.25" SATA USB 3.0 External 5.25" Optical Drive Enclosure USB 3.0 External Interface - Newegg.ca

I went one step further and purchased an enclosure so that I could upgrade it to Blu Ray if that ever becomes more popular on PC.

I think the Evolv is pretty minimilistic to me. Nice clean lines.

If you really like a case without a 5.25, I'd just say go for it and either get an external enclosure for a 5.25" bay (should be sub $30 easily) or a USB CD drive. For the 2-3 times a year when I rip a bunch of CDs, it's just as easy and serviceable and I don't miss the drive otherwise. The Sans-5.25 case market just seems so much better IMO

The Evolv is beautiful, but my only issue with it compared to the Enthoo Pro or Pro-M is that it doesn't have nearly as much airflow. It shouldn't be an issue with a single GPU, so you should be good, but FYi.

Still looking at cases...lol.
I got really excited/intrigued with EVGA's upcoming DG8x (DG-84 thru DG-87) series. Especially with a pre-order discount happening right now. However, another situation of having optical drive bay. I'm still on the fence with using an external USB enclosure for CD/BD drive.

You don't have to use a 5.25" enclosure for a full size ODD. A simple slim portable DVD burner that writes at 8x should be more than enough and is about 30$.
