Default Need help with case airflow questions

I have some questions regarding cases and the space needed for airflow. Specifically, just how much space is needed in order to ensure proper airflow for cooling. In this case, the planned location for my computer has exactly 19" between the sheld that the case would be sitting on and the shelf above it. I need to know just how much space am I going to need to allow for, in order for the case to cool properly AND to avoid any heat damage issues to the shelf material above (wood, if it matters).
For one thing, as I understand it, the general airflow in cases would have top fans be blowing outwards, which means heated air. If the fans are too close to the shelf above, is it likely to cause damage? How far should the shelf be above the fan to compensate for this? Is one inch enough? Two inches?
I know that I can rule out full tower cases, but I'm hoping that a reasonable mid-tower case can still fit in the area.
Any help with these questions would be appreciated.

An inch or two clearance above the top of your case should be enough. As long as there is plenty of space for the air above you case to escape to (i.e. don't enclose your case in a tight wooden box).
