My System Specs

Default Switched from a 650D to a Fractal R3

Hey all,

I've just switched to a Fractal R3 from a Corsair 650D, I have to say it's a very nice case.

The R3 is smaller than the 650D yet much much quieter, however, it was harder to work with due to space constraints. Some things I don't like are the standoffs being like .5mm off and some of the screw points for my new PSU were a bit off as well. Nothing really bad but I think Fractal should consider making a slightly more expensive R3 variant for the $150 price point and it would totally destroy. Also the top cable routing grommet for 8pin mobo power was very hard to make use of.

All in all I'm very happy with the switch, my PC is used in a home studio and the silence + cooling offered is superb.

I currently have 3x Noctua S12B's as intake and one S12B as exhaust.

CPU HSF is a Noctua NH-D14 with the ULNA and my mobo set to silent, it doesn't start the 120mm fan until it's needed and the 140mm is running at 600rpm. It's barely audible. I may test not running the bottom 120mm to further reduce noise.

I've also put an Asus 6950 DC II in it and it just barely fit, I had to tilt it during installation to fit.

Temps (rig in sig) - 40c idle CPU, 65c prime95 for an hour.
6950 is at 45c idle and got to 82c with furmark for an hour. I ran prime95+Furmark for that hour to get my temps. Very impressive.

I only have a few pics but here you go!

Nice. I also switched from the mammoth 650d to a fractal design define Mini, instead of the r3 and I am very happy as well.

May I ask why you switched? The 650d is a great case. Personally I switched simply because I was too big for my liking.

Case looking spectacular, here's a question for you: I am planning to buy this case and the CPU cooler, but what CPU are you using? and did you overclock it? Because I thought that the NH D-14 can do much better than 40c on idle.

Last question: the fan at the bottom beside the PSU, is it blowing air into or out of the case?

His specs are listed in his signature -- i7 920. The label's your indicator of airflow direction on a fan, the label faces the direction of airflow.

The bottom fan blows into the case and his idle temps are because his center fan is running at 50% and the front fan is off for silence.

65c under prime 95 load when the fans are going full is a quite good temp.

i just bought the arc midi which is a bigger case ( around the 600t or 650) and can fit a double thick 240 rad in it and i love it glad i chose it over the R3

Oh hahaha, I didn't know you can control the fan speed for the CPU heatsink :S

Yep, have it set down to 700~rpm on the 140mm, the spare 120 doesn't start spinning until the larger 140 reaches about 900rpm, then they both run.

Yea, if I went water I'd go larger case for sure. Maybe Epic 180 closed loop and a Define XL minimum. But I want silence. This setup is maybe 22~db @ 1m.
