I wouldn't call it "stupid". Everyone has their own preference. There are pros and cons to each placement option.

Airflow, dust, cable length, easier cable access, front panel button pushing(or non-accidental pushing), less likely to be scratched/dented, easy quick servicing for anything that does not require the other side panel to be removed.
My desk is ancient and has drawers under the sides so I have no room under it with the power conditioner/footrest and G25 pedals and speakers. The back is blocked off as well so I would have to drill holes for cables.
Also, my side panel does not fit with my cooler in there so the floor is a big big never no matter what..

I have always kept my desktop on my desk. Sitting on the floor all I can think about is all of that nasty stuff it's sucking in.

Actually, right now it's on a wooden kids desk located next to my main desk. I like it there.

Neither.

It's on a flipped-over milk crate beside my desk. Best of both worlds!

I'm at sort of the halfway point with this one. I'm actually in the process of painting a garage sale Ikea coffee table that I plan on putting beside my desk, which will then support the bulky full tower. The 800D draws air in from the bottom of the case, so I don't want to have the case on the ground acting as a vacuum cleaner, but at the same time I don't want the huge case taking up valuable desk space. I think I've devised an optimal compromise

I voted "desk," as it is the closest of the options to what I'm doing.

On desk, after all the time/money spent making it look purdy I wanna be able to see it. It has 10 fans but its still very quiet 2 ft away from my head.

It was on the floor, or rather just above the floor, i hated it there, constantly bending over, the last straw was busting a front facing USB stick with my leg.

My desk isn't exactly huge, nor do i have a whole lot of space, so i built a shelf next to my desk, i am quite happy now. It's not perfect, still...
