If the case is installed upside-down with no forced airflow, the heat is trapped against the board. It could have been better with the Noctua HSF - having a better fan - since the stock HSF barely move any, in my opinion...

I did consider the fact that the case is upside down WRT heat, but it's more than that since I can replicate the failure with the case sitting upright. Pretty sure the only way to save the case for this particular build would be to figure out a way to strap a fan to the top (If I had a 92mm fan guard I might have tried the noctua.... ;) ). That said... I'm looking into options for using that noctua if I pick up a different case that won't block SDD storage. Electronic supplies are pretty limited around here, but I'll see if I can find some small sockets that would fit over a fan pin, and barring that I'm considering hard wiring an extension to the MB header pins.... :)

I do have a 92mil grill, that I don't use...

As for mitx cases, I had some success with the MI-008 (and it's twin from TT), the SG05 (larger though) and the (even larger) Inwin BP671.

I just tried running with the case top on and a 140mm blowing air into the case without any luck. I didn't try it pulling and will try that after I run a few loops with the side off to confirm that it doesn't freeze on me. Other than that.... I'm leaning towards the Lone Industries one here.... Lone Industries - L1 Mini-ITX Computer Case

I suspect there might be two things working against airflow in this case... one being the lack of proper case fan (the 40mm mount on the front is blocked by the memory) and the other is the fact that the HDD mount closes in that side of the case.

edit: I suppose I should go all the way and strap one of my 38X120mm Scythe leafblowers onto there just to put an end to all possibilities.... ;)

Yeah that's a lower power dual core, and I'll bet nobody has ever actually stressed them 100% on both the cpu and IGP. :)

This system works fine for day to day, although it did die on me during a DIII run. I'm going to mull over my options for now. It's doing what it needs to do, and if I want to try some more DIII on it I can always take the case top off. :)

I hope you get your temps resolved, 51 degrees on the ssd is getting up there just for that component. When you had the cover off what was the temp of the ssd then just to see if it's really helping?

You seem to have the width for a wider case, have you considered a case like this:

SilverStone Technology Co., Ltd.- ML04

Would also fill in the gap at the bottom.

Temps with the cover off max out around 40c. I'm pretty much focused on an actual mITX solution as opposed to a small mATX case, IMO even the prodigy need not apply as it's too big. I don't even want something big enough for an ODD, but there are a few cases out there with SFF PSUs that might fit the bill.

Well... I'm throwing in the towel WRT using this particular hardware in the M350. Just ordered one of these so there will be a new build log showing up over the next couple of weeks....... Newegg.ca - Cooler Master Elite 130 - Mini-ITX Computer Case with Mesh Front Panel and Water Cooling Support .

All is not lost though. I'll keep my eyes open for a deal on a low power/heat mITX setup that I can throw into the M350 for rear mounting on a monitor.

I found using an FM2 with a built in low profile heatsink worked great for me, sorry to hear that something 'bigger' couldn't quite handle itself in there.
