Default BigA$$Nas

So I have started up the planning phase of my next project. As the title suggests a huge nas. Not to the physical size but the storage capacity. Here are the parts i have decided on

AMD X2 4000+
4GB Corsair DDR2-667 (4x 1gb)
Acera 1220 8 Port PCI-E Raid Card (0,1,5,6,10.jbod)
Antec P182 Case
Antec Neo HE 500 PSU
Asus Mobo
D-Tek Fuzion
Swiftech MCP655
Swiftech 120.1 Rad
750GB HDD (Seagate or Samsung) x4 (to start, adding another 4 later on)

Updates to follow

it either going to be the 64 bit variant of server 2003 R2 Std or Linux of some form probably either 64bit ubuntu or BSD. IN regards to free nas. it's ok but not that user friendly.

fortunately i can probably get server 03 through work. But the linux option is also free. as far as set it and for get it. the best solution would either windows file sharing, or linux with samba.

bit of a drawback. Unfortunately the raid card i want to use will not work with a desktop motherboard only server boards :( so now i am looking at a 1x 4 port card. Since i am generally only reading from it. i should be fine. The bonus here is it saves me around $400 bucks. Once i get my refund cheque deposited i should be good to start ordering. Hopefully by then the seagate 7200.11's will be super cheap so i can buy 8 :D

Check out the EX8350 from Promise. It's a PCIe 4x card, HARDWARE RAID, Promise SuperTrak EX8350 Serial ATA RAID Controller, SUPERTRAK EX8350, FrontierPC.com Canada

Quite the card, I am considering it too....

ah nice another WC rig...how about a slightly larger swiftech rad? sure 120.1 is enough though for a dualcore.

again, the same dillemma, the motherboard i have only has one x1 and one x16. And i am not going to invest serious cash in a raid controller that won't work in my mother board. I don't know if the M2A-VM can handle a non graphics card in it's X16 slot. If it can then i would buy the areca. a much better card IMHO than the promise. Not that theres anythign wrong with the promise.

I am currently running a amd x2 BE 5000+ and dual hd3850's in cross fire on a single thermochill 120.1 without incident. Idle temps around the 32-35 mark. it will get better once my building turns on it's AC.
