I know that what police services use (or at least did at one time) for cleaning up their finger printing equipment is the purest ethanol made, but I'm not sure exactly what percentage of H2O it contains.

Been to more than one bash where this was the main magical ingredient in the fruit punch.

Check this out : Fluid Conductivity

Iso is listed as a 'good conductor......
I'll be damned, it's right up there with.....vodka!

That's a neat website, thanks for the link. Some interesting things on there. I like how they list mercury...lol

hmm isnt liquid silicone a non conductor? you could run pure liquid silicone.

or theirs always running it on liquid helium.

im wondering were you live, i wanna check this thing out only if you don't mind.

I'm a bonehead , is what the problem is.

I committed the mother of all f*(kups , way back in the design stages of this project....I made an assumption.

Murphy does not suffer assumptions , and well , I got burned.

I assumed that because I made the k6-450 work in 99% Iso , that it did not conduct...and this is not true....(In all fairness I have several textbooks that state pure alcohols do not conduct).

Bottom line , I did not double check , and well....I'm stupid for not doing so.

--------------------

I did the double check research today tho.

Lo-and-behold , Isopropanol is one of the most conductive alcohols.

Iso is listed as a 'good conductor' .

Some lessons must be learned the hard way.Ah well , It's all good.

-------

This list does however suggest my next 2 choices !!

Anhydrous Acetone should work , and interestingly ( because misterlarry suggested it ) anhydrous Ethanol should also work.

I am going to look into suppliers for these materials.

It's ok dude... no one would learn anything if they didn't make mistakes. You'll hit a homerun with this rig before long... you threw yourself a curve ball and still took a swing at it. Besides with the amount of thought and time invested into your setup It's easy to miss the simple things.

Next time we could try pure russian vodka... and if it doesnt work well we can drink it! :P

I say you use bromine....you would have a computer literally frozen in a block of it while working :D:D:D That would be cool

Actually Siloxanes are one class of chemical I must totally avoid. All the seals are 'silicone' so they will dissolve in a silicone oil.....

-----

Thx everyone.Yep , mistakes are part of learning.

S'all good tho.

From all appearances , Anhydrous Ethanol is a drop-in replacement for Isopropanol...it's a little 'harsher' on the 'materials compatability' area , a little bit more flammable , but allround it should be no problem. It's thinner than Iso when cold , and it's MP is -112 C ...

A quick note about using booze (Ethanol).

While yes , I could run pure (un-denatured) anhydrous alcohol that you could drink , I'll be doing my best to use undrinkable , "denatured ethanol " , and here's why : if you can drink it it's taxed very heavily.Might double the cost.

The important thing is that , whatever they add to denature it (usually methanol) has to be non-conducting as well.

I have hunted down Canada's Industrial Alcohol leader : Comalc

They will have an email from me waiting for them monday morn.
