Antec P182 Case Mod -Home Media Server

Happy New Year everyone!

This will be my first post and my second case mod. I did not make a log of the first one because i just didn't think about it. :haha:

Anyways, i have this old Antec P182 that i have not used in a while and it is just sitting there collecting dust so i thought i would update it to have better cooling, better cable management and give it a nice paint job. I was also thinking of cutting a window into it but i have heard how tough they sides are and i am undecided on this for now. I'm not sure what i will do with the case yet, i might put my main rig in it or maybe build a home server in it. I guess i'll figure it out as i go along.

First some pictures of the case after pulling it out of my storage closet

Not sure how this side got scratched but oh well, this is why i want to paint it.

I figured i'd start with the front bezel. I don't really like the front bezel door, so i will be removing that

The lock and power/reset buttons are raised and higher than the left side so i will be removing that side and mold it to match the other side.

Then after placing some Bondo fiberglass filler and putty (the putty is where the red marks are)

All it needs now is some primer and paint. But that will have to wait till i can go purchase some.
I also removed the fan filters as they did not fit anymore. I will be creating some new ones out of acrylic to go over the front fans.

Next i decided to take the case apart, so off i went with the drill and a 1/8" bit to de-rivet the case.

First some pics of the case without the sides and front.

Then after some power tool action

What i plan on doing is getting rid of the middle support, reversing the lower 3.5" bay, cutting some holes on the motherboard, adding a 120mm fan hole in the bottom and cutting out the built in grills for all the 120mm fan spaces. Hopefully i get some time to work more on this tomorrow.

I have some updates on this build . . .

I started cutting the fan holes, first the bottom

Sorry about the very uneven cutting, i'm still getting used to the dremel, hopefully i get to have alot of practice with it in the next few months

Next will be painting and reassembling the case.

How would you rate the scythe Q8 fan controller?

:thumb: for cutting up that mobo tray

didnt look like much cable management there

Ryknw01 April 12, 2012 10:13 AM

The Q8 is great! it's been working like a charm and i picked it up for very cheap. It works surprisingly good for its price. There's only one thing that bothers me a bit. The knobs are very close together because there's 8 in such a small space and it is kinda hard for me to turn them because i have really big fingers lol. But other than that it does it job perfectly.

The cable management for this case was all supossed to be done through the middle panel, but it was still visible on the bottom chamber, thats why i removed the middle panel.
