adapter arrived, popped into the first slot, no go, popped in the second slot (the one 3.0charlie operated on with the Dremmel), works from first boot. Will update with pictures and gaming impressions but now i do have access to brightnes and hue and color, everything you need to tweak the image level.

so I am gaming NFS HP 2011 (aka NFS14) it is a little slow at first 5 seconds then it goes fine, resolution is 800x600, sometimes it slows to a creep but is only for 2-3 seconds. I guess it is loading textures and is bottle necked by the 200MB/s bandwidth of the x1 port. Remember, Radeon HD 4550 has only 80 processors clocked @600MHz, and 256 MB DDR3 memory clocked at 800MHz. I take that the slow gaming is due both to the small memory and low processing power. I deactivated an option called hi resolution textures and the game is good even at 1024x768 but is lacking RAM big time, I try to solve that temporarily by increasing the swap file but I ordered 4x1GB sticks of DDR 2 667 ECC from ebay (40$ shipping included) which should solve the issue. I decided to keep the platform for myself, for the moment I am transcoding my gf's DVD collection with Handbrake, average speed is 150fps, 6 times faster than realtime. Audio was an issue too, an Audigy 2ZS is hard locking the system, so I got an USB soundcard based on C Media 108 chipset, (10$ local store) fantastic sound from the first try. The Audigy 2ZS works fine on a 790FX chipset mobo so must be a design incompatibility or crappy Creative drivers.

I am reviving this thread as I would like to go ahead with a LGA 771 to 775 Xeon mod. I just revived my DFI Lan Party mobo, the CMOS battery was dying, I upgraded to the last bios using the USB drive method from DOS ( I feel so hardcore, given the fact that I am born on PC in the Windows 98 era!). I am looking for a forum member, or if you have a friend that likes to mod stuff please give me a shout! Usually I would enlist the help of 3.0charlie but he moved to Quebec city.

Actually, I'm back in greater MTL, but I have no idea what this 'mod' entails....

I'll need a LGA 771 Xeon modded with that adapter to make it work in the LGA 775, a CM212, cutting down the notches in the LGA 775 socket and install the CPU and the CM212 on top of it. Is it better to get a lower power sku or high powered one for OVC? All details here : LGA 771 to 775 Adapter (MOD) - Run faster Xeon CPUs in a Core 2 Quad motherboard

Got one already modded Xeon CPU from Soullesone21, waiting to arrive.

God this is an awesome mod. I wish there was something like this for newer chipsets. 1150 to 1155 comes to mind...

A bit of overclock, just to show that is possible!
For Sagath : LGA 771 and 775 are the same architecture, just a few pins different, so are 1155 and 1150 just they are different architectures.
