Default Dream Machine

Hey guys,

I'm a little new here, but I am starting to like the place. After some planning my parts have started arriving. My final parts list is:

Motherboard: Asus P5N-T Deluxe
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
RAM: 4GB (4x1GB or 2x2GB Kits) Crucial Ballistix DDR2-1066
Video Card: 2x eVGA 8800GT 512MB
NIC: 1x Intel PRO/1000 Pt PCI-E Gigabit NIC
Sound: Creative X-Fi Xtrememusic (harvested from my old system)
ODD: Samsung SH-S203N SATA Black
HDD: 2x WD 74GB Raptors in RAID0, 3x Seagate 500GB 7200.11 in RAID5
PSU: Silverstone Zeus ST75ZF 750W

NB Block: Swiftech MCW30
SB Block: Ek Water Blocks EK-ASUS NB/SB 1 Acetal Top
CPU Block: D-TEK Customs Fuzion w/ Nozzle Kit
Video Card Block(s): EK FC8800 w/ Acetal Top (Ordered direct from EK)
Radiator: HW Labs Black Ice GT Xtreme 480 Quadruple 120MM (Pa 120.3 was out of stock, and this looks wicked sick! )
Pump: Swiftech MCP655
Reservoir: Danger Den Single Bay Reservoir 5.25IN
Tubing: 2x 5ft bags of 1/2" Tygon Tubing

Unboxing the first shipment.

All laid out.

The case (and my cat).

Test fitting the rad.

Mounting the drives.

Argh! The bay covers won't fit with my hard drives mounted! Going to have to dremel them later. Emailed Silverstone about this.

Mounting the pump and rad. I've just used adhesive-backed velcro for easy removal. At first I used some automotive velcro from Home Hardware, but I picked up some 'Industrial Strength' stuff from Zellers which holds A LOT better.

Different angle on the mounting.

I've since bundled up the power wire from the pump and attached the hose that will go to the CPU. Still waiting for my motherboard and nb/sb blocks to arrive. Apparently the VGA blocks shipped from EK last week some time, so hopefully they don't get stuck in customs too long.

Nice to see you putting everything into action! Should be a fun rig when it's all done.

Funny about those front bezels... doesn't seem like Silverstone at all. I don't have any experience with the case, but is it possible to flip the bezels, then insert them so that the screw holding the HDD brackets screw up into the bezels threads as well?

I noticed the NOD 32 package in the photo... I've got that myself. Haven't had any problems yet (from the program or from malware), but even after Vista boots up, the program takes another 10-15 seconds to load, during which it blocks access to a lot of low-level system settings.

I thought of that, but it would be a very tight fit, and very tricky to do since the case doesn't have any 'rails' to hold the drive in place. Maybe I'll try giving it a go.

-EDIT-

Yeah, there is no way they're both going to fit in there without some cutting.

I think MpG is right. As you can see what I outline in your one photo. It appears the brackets for the front bezels slides under the rails for the HDD as then all the holes would line up.

It would seem so, but there is just no way that will work. With the adapter installed there is no room in between it and the side of the bay for the cover.

Have you tried pulling out the screws that hold the bay in, sliding the front bezel brackets underneath the adapter and putting the screws back in. From the picture it looks like there is enough room. Plus in the photo it looks like the screws are bending the HDD adapters unnaturally.

Ok, I took out the front four screws on the hdd adapter and tried to slide the bay cover in. The holes that 'line up' have a lip on them, so I had to bend the hdd adapter, slide the bay cover in, and line it up. Then I had to press the hdd adapter against the bay cover and screw the screw in so it would lock into both. It's a little convoluted, but it worked, and was a PITA. Four more to go...

Awesome, can't wait to see more pics. This is going to be one sick build. Good Luck.

, I somehow broke the cover for the USB slots while putting on the lowermost cover. Now with the covers on there I can't see what is wrong.

Case: 1
Me: 0

-EDIT-

I think I can fix it. Some screws popped out, and the door has come off its hinges. The door is going to be tricky as hell, and the screws are in awkward places as well. I don't know which is worse: taking out all the drives and then fixing it or working around the drives.

-EDIT2-

Gonna have to take the whole case apart to fix this. I'll grab a bite to eat and start taking shit out.

Okay, all of that is back together. The door is held on by four tiny screws that screw a shroud into the case. These are the same type of screws that hold the grille for the fans at the top of the case. As anyone who owns this case knows those screws are a PITA. One of them stripped the threads in the case when it popped out, but it seems that the other three are sufficient to hold it on there.

Mounting the bay covers bends those hard drive adapters pretty badly. I really hope nothing happens while I'm moving the system occasionally.
