Go for the Quad; using a Prescott with a GTX or an Ultra will only create a bottleneck condition.

I would get the quad core- that would give you the best all-round performance boost. Then maybe in march you can get one of the newer generation- while still the best out there, the 8800GTX is still a little pricey and aging

Ixnay on the 8800GTX or Ultra. Both severely overpriced for their performance. Both the 8800GT and GTS 512 come fairly close, at a much better price.

Quad-cores are nice, but you need to stick their heat somewhere, and there are still a limited number of applications that can use them.

Perhaps upgrading to a dual-core processor and an 8800GT? That would get you a net gain on both the video and processor fronts, while still falling within the same budget range as the GTX or Ultra?

Default thanks for the replies

i should just start by saying thanks !

my real goal is to build the sweetest gaming rig possible and you imput really helps .

i'm kinda partial to the quad core - i feel like in the future it will quickly become the dominate processor and i wouldn't want to have to swap processor in like 6mths to a year. that being said : do you think dual is better

also

how well do think 8800 gt is going to fair in the future ? I mean no one has a crystal ball but: anyone got any game time logged with one -

i have a sli mobo and i was thinking if i went with a single gtx now i could add a second on like 6-8mths down the rd for a even more of a boost - thinking that two gtx are gonna womp 2 -8800 gt what do you think

Cyrsis is really pissing me off these days as im currently get 15 - 20 fps in it and at 1028x768 on med ... really don't know if its just SH!tty code or what but im gonna have to upgrade so .. imput is more then welcomed

ps just to add my max res on my monitor is 1200x1024 or something and soon ill probally add a new 20 inch ....

Crysis simply doesn't do well with multi-GPU setups, even with the 1.1 patch. You'll get far better improvements out of a single, stronger card.

You said 'or' when you asked about a GPU or a Q6600. If you've the money for both, go nuts. But honestly, the GTS 512 is consistently nipping at the heals of the GTX these days (sometimes edging it out), costs a lot less, and you can SLI that in the future too.

Depending on your urgency, in February there's also talk of Nvidia putting out a '9800 GTX', which is supposed to beat out the Ultra, without resorting to a dual-PCB setup.

Default Fyi This Board Rock

MPG,
thank for the heads up,

it not that i got money to burn or nothing but i see my PC as as work in progress . add the best possible now and save up for the next - and on and on - lol

if you wanted to maximizes playability on my current system would go the CPU route or the video card route first .. i guess i wasn't really clear about that- my fault Thanks again i probably won't be playing on res higher then 1680 x 1050 in the the foreseeable future

(FYI your idea of going dual core cpu with a gt was pretty slick )

I would say go with the Q6600 and then the 8800 GT, or GTS.. It's alot cheaper that way, and if you OC the GPU it's honestly really close to the GTX anyways, for half the price.

I say 8800GT as the new quads are coming out and if your board supports it you'll have a wicked video card and the ability to upgrade to an awesome processor.

Q6600, overclock it, and grab Two 8800GTS 512mb cards. If you have the cash, get what you want!
