Default The Silent Monster

I thought it would be interesting to post a worklog/build log of my new machine that I am dubbing "The Silent Monster". The goal is to have a near silent running PC while keeping it at or below recommended operating tempratures.

First up is the PC parts list:
  • 1x Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Quad Core CPU
  • 1x Asus Maximus Formula Motherboard
  • 2x Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500 DDR2 CL 5-5-5-15 2GB kit
  • 2x Diamond Radeon HD 3870 512MB PCI-E Video card
  • 1x Samsung SH-S203N Black SATA DVD-RW
  • 1x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA2 750GB w/32MB Cache HDD
  • 1x PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W PFC PSU
  • 1x Antec P182 Black Mid-Tower
Now trying to keep that setup cool on air would be pretty noisy, add to that most people are reporting that the HD 3870's get as hot as 90C under full load. Not good for a computer that is sitting beside my TV (small apartment lol). Then add to that, the CPU can get almost as hot from what people were saying so DOH!.

My solution to this dilema was to go water cooling, well I know nothing about water cooling ha! But that did not stop me from jumping full on in to it, add to that although the P182 is good for a WC setup it is not optimal DOH! again oh well that is what the welding bay at work is for

Now the list for the water cooling setup:
  • 1x D-Tek Customs Fuzion CPU water block w/0.5" barbs
  • 1x Thermalright LG775 Bolt-through kit
  • 1x Swiftech MCP655 Industrial pump
  • 1x Thermochill PA 120.3 Tripple 120mm radiator
  • 1x Thermochill PA 120.3 Tripple 120mm radiator fan grill
  • 2x Thermochill 0.5" Crome plated barbs
  • 3x Noctua NF-P12-1300 120mm fan
  • 1x Swiftech MCB-120 Radiator box revision 2
  • 1x Swiftech MCRES-Micro clear resivoir
  • 2x D-Tek Customs Fuzion GFX water block w/0.5" barbs
  • 4x D-Tek Customs 0.5" Crome plated barbs (pairs)
  • 4x Polyproplene 0.5" "Y" barb
  • 1x Swiftech 625 coils
  • 5x Fluid XP+ Extreme Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Non-Conductive fluid
  • 1x Swiftech Hydrex Water cooling additive
  • 50'x Tygon 0.5" Inner Diameter clear tubing (yup a lot of tubbing no NCIX was out and shipping from the US was pretty steep. So I ordered bulk from a supplier here in Canada who sells the stuff apart of normal lab stock so look for some to be in the Buy & Sell forum soon hah! :))
And that is where the machine sits right now, I just got on to days off and of which all will be devoted to building the machine. Well as long as the rest of the Fluid XP+ get shipped from NCIX along with the radbox. Photos of all the parts will follow later today as I forgot my tripod in the car and it is at work hah.
