Just curious about this: Why is it that many of these multi-socket motherboards don't have their CPU sockets aligned and perpendicular to eachother? They are always off set.

My guess would be how it fits with regards to the RAM slots. Having the two sets of RAM slots side by side would probably take up a lot more space than it does now.

It could be to align the parts of the i7 dies that have the QPI links to reduce trace lengths on the motherboard.

Some boards like the standard ATX size ASUS Z8NA have them lined up. I prefer them offset - especially with air cooling. If venting out the back, I like the sockets offset so one fan doesn't blow hot air directly in the other (for tower / heatpipe style coolers)
