Default The 100TB Project

I store things. A LOT of things.
I've had large file servers damn near as long as I've had a computer. I'm ALWAYS running out of space.

Until now.

You've probably heard me pushing the SC846E1 + 9690SA-4I.
A few here have adopted it. It's tried tested and true.

Those crazy enough to need this much space usually stop at 1 case. I plan on 5 or as many as I can get before they EOL.

Every case from here on in will be linked to the other. It has LVM and an XFS file system to support live growth.
100TB is just a milestone. I have no plans on stopping there as long as cases and SATA2 drives are available.

This project is literally over a year in the making. I've had a few delays and a few part swaps.

I present: Phase 1 of The 100TB Project

Picasa Web Albums - death_hawk - File Server

Specs:
-SC846E1
-9690SA-4I w/ BBU
-Intel G41TY
-Intel GT
-Intel E5300
-1GB Crucial RAM
-500GB WD Blue
-24x 1TB Black TLERed

Oh and since the SC846 has dropped in price so much, I'm starting Phase 2 immediately. I might even pick up the case for Phase 3.

So what size drives are you using once you start populating them? Is there a sweet spot ATM for $/GB?

It's a WIP so I'm guessing he'll add drives as he goes. The list says they are 1TB each, so he has 24TB accounted for, before you consider RAID. He has a picture up that shows 18TB after formatting and assembling the arrays, so is it RAID5?

yep, he was all putting it in raid 5. When you back up the web, you need redundancy, no ?
