Default Project: The Horde

So i have decided to go about building a dedicated file server. It will called the horde. You will see why. This is a 4U 20 Drive rackmount SAS enclosure system. I ordered the parts i needed to start this today. Hopefully they will start to arrive in the next couple of weeks.

Raid Card: dell perc5i SAS Raid Card
CPU: AMD A64X2 7550 2.5Ghz

SAS Cables: 1x SFF8484 -> SFF8087 Multilane Cable (this one was a pain to find), 5x SFF8087 -> SFF8087 Multilane SAS Cable
SAS Expander: Chenbro CK12804 28port SAS Expander
PSU: Corsair HX750W PSU
Storage Drives: 8x 1TB WD Black

i billing this has the poormans big file server. since you can get a moreelegant solution from supermicro but the case + expander is about double. One word of note the chenbro expanders only seem to be available through distributers so you will either need to know a reseller, be a reseller or look at the HP sas expander.

update time.

so i recieved most of my hardware. However i still can't start my project for 2 reasons.

1. I am still waiting on the sas expander. I can't really use it without the expander.
2. The case i recieved was damaged. So i will either sit on it until purolator finishes it's claim process and i get a new one or i will get the expander and say fudge it and build it anyway (since it's superficial damage).

But most importantly (and more important than the expander.) is i got my SAS adapter cable for my perc 5i. It was incredibly hard to find a SFF8484 to SFF8087. I had to order it through the US.

Is this a special adapter? My SFF8484 to 4 Sata was 20 bucks US shipped from China for 2x @ 0.5 Meters each.

Because your cable is a SATA breakout cable. This is a SAS cable. Unlike some Sata Breakout cables SAS cables are generally diretional cables. So the one SFF8087 -> SFF8484 would not work as the direction has to be reversed. There is a big difference between SATA and SAS mostly being the number of deivces that can be addressed. (4 port breakout cable can hook up to 4 drives, 4 port SAS cable + SAS expander means you can connect a maximum of 125 devices per SAS channel IIRC)

Cool, it was a quick reply before i had to run away @ work. Hope it works out well. I haven't even tried my Perc 5i yet, I really should though. Hope I don't have to do any pin mods.

If you have an intel based desktop board (non server) then you need to do the pin mod if you have an amd/nvidia based board it should work as they don't use the offending item (Intel smbus) I use a peice of scotch tape and it works fine in my p5q pro.
