That is because the SN is recorded as a retail channel product.
I have RMA'd two products bought through retail edge, and BOTH required a receipt because the SN code is listed as a Retail Edge product sale.
The same way you would not be able to obtain warranty on a CPU that was intended for OEM (defined by the SN/model code) or one that was bought outside of the country/coverage area of the area you are attempting to get warranty in.
