Default Physx Card

Update: Picked up a new GT240 on a Newegg shellshocker for $65 - $15 rebate so I'm not looking anymore. Thanks for the help.

Thinking of trying to add a Physx card to my 5870 gaming machine. Seems like it can be done with hacked Nvidia drivers so I was thinking of giving it a shot. My budget is $50 shipped so I was looking for something like an 8800GT or 9600GT. Maybe a 9600GS. Just picked up an 8800GTS 512MB for $50 locally but it is assigned to my server

I am in Ottawa if there is anyone that wants to do a local deal. Let me know what you have.

I have an offer for an 8800GTS 512MB (128 SP) for $70. That should be enough for Physx you think?

Thanks. This is only 32 shaders from what I am reading. The 8800GTS would be 128 shaders. I thought that I heard that you really need something like an 8800GT or 9600GT as entry level to make a difference in Physx.

My 9600GSO (96 shader) does very well. I think the minimum is a 8500/9500GT. The 240 is a 96 shader as well (just check the specs at newegg):

Sorry. I should learn to read. I saw "texture units" = 32 and I should have read teh "shader processors" = 96. My bad.

I guess that the advantage of this over the 8800GTS would be lower power consumption and probably run cooler? I have a fairly large case (HAF922) but no point adding more power than necessary. I also am not a "fan" of fan noise so will need to see if this thing runs quiet.

Thanks for the pointers

OK. Pulled the trigger on this Newegg GT240. Will end up being $65 after tax, shipping, and rebate. A bit above budget but this is a brand new card and lower power than my alternatives.

Thanks guys.

Ya the GT 240 will be more efficient than that 512MB 8800, I was using a 9800GT, now a 9600GT XXX to give my son's PC the 9800GT for Nvidia 3D..

You can use the newest ATI drivers of course, but the hack usually requires the Nvidia driver to be one or two versions older...
