Not everyone is that honest though, so if you do happen to have videos of you and the wife and they get leaked out in a situation like this its your own fault.

Personally i use wipe drive to zero drives, maybe a second or third pass just to feel more secure even if it makes no difference.
if you cant use the hwardware method, then go with 35 passes and leave it there till it finishes..might take a few days. if the drive is fine after that, then thats quite the stability test as well :)
the only thing is make sure its properly cooled, cooking for 2-3 days can damage a good drive.

May seem a wee bit redundant, I am personally a fan of Boot and Nuke, but recently ran into an issue where it would not support a flash drive and also a WD 80GB HDD. So, i turned to the ubuntu live CD and used the shred command (as referenced here Tools to delete files securely in ubuntu Linux|Ubuntu Geek ) :

Shred Syntax

shred [option(s)] file(s)_or_devices(s)

Available Options

-f, --force - change permissions to allow writing if necessary

-n, --iterations=N - Overwrite N times instead of the default (25)

-s, --size=N - shred this many bytes (suffixes like K, M, G accepted)

-u, --remove - truncate and remove file after overwriting

-v, --verbose - show progress

-x, --exact - do not round file sizes up to the next full block

-z, --zero - add a final overwrite with zeros to hide shredding
-shred standard output

--help - display this help and exit

--version - output version information and exit

I'm not sure how good of a job it does, but the WD version of Acronis (Free DL from their website, will only run if there is at least one WD drive in the system) has a HDD cleaner option which offers many different methods of wiping the drive and defaults to the US DOD standard security mode.

I've always used DBAN and never had a problem with it.

A single pass wipe on any newer hard drive will make sure the data is un-retrievable.

Yes a single full erase pass will do for any but the most determined snoop. You can do a single pass using something like dban or use dd in *nix

Actually even the most determined snoop won't be able to get anything off of it. In my class (for computer forensics) we were talking about this very subject and they've tested this and we were told that even an electron microscope couldn't get any information after a single pass was done.
