Default GPU block

Since I got my 750i, I'd like to now buy a WC block for either a 9800GTX+ or a gtx260 core 216.
I want to keep it simple since this is going into my folding rig, and I don't want to spend much.

Ideally, I'd like to use a 9800gtx+, 8800gts and 8600gts in the rig, so I'd like to have as many pci-e slots as possible.

I'm no folding expert, but doesn't mixing cards like that severely cripple overall performance.

...and wouldn't you need three PCI-E x16 slots?

Technically 3x PCI-E 8x would work fine as none of those cards require the bandwidth of a 16x PCI-E slot. But as far as I know mixing cards doesnt effect performance, each card processes its own WUs and generates its own PPD. Each card runs its own instance of F@H =)

Sounds good in theory, but I remember that it really didn't work well a little while back. Perhap F@H has been updated?

The issue is related to number of stream processors. You can mix and match to your heart's delight as long as all the cards have the same number of stream procs. Once you start mixing cards that have different numbers of stream procs, then it starts getting a bit iffy.

For example, a 9800GTX with 128 SPs with an 8800GT with 112 SPs will result in significant performance degradation on whichever card is designated GPU1 (usually the one in slot two), while the card designated as GPU0 will fold at normal speed.

But - if you combine said 9800GTX with a 9600GT with 64 SPs, both cards will still fold at full speed because 64 is a factor of 128. The same could be said for a 32 SP 8600GT. In this case, though, the order of the cards matters, because the 128 SP card must be designated GPU0 (usually in slot one). If the card with the lower SP count is designated GPU0, then the 128 SP card will not run at full speed.

So in summary:

Mixing & matching cards with the same number of stream procs = all good.
Mixing & matching cards with different stream proc counts that cannot be factored together = all bad.
Mixing & matching cards with different stream proc counts that can be factored together = good if you can put them in the right order.
