Exclamation Updates & Current Changes to Buy & Sell rules

There's recently been a lot of talk about our policy WRT allowing a 24 hour grace period for images to be posted and we're still working out the finer details of how we want to (or even "can" based on forum limitations) proceed.

Until we get everything finalized we're going ahead with a few minor tweaks starting tomorrow AM.

The whole idea behind the 24 hour grace period was to allow for the fact that very few newcomers to a website read through the buy and sell rules prior to posting. We want to give newcomers the benefit of the doubt, and offer them a carrot on their first visit rather than beat them over the head with the rules.

One thing it was never intended to be was a blanket grace period for subsequent buy&sell threads. If you've posted in the buy and sell threads before, you already know the requirements for posting, and as such will not be given a grace period. Please be ready with images when you make a fresh buy&sell thread.

That said, there is still a valid concern about new posters without images that needs to be addressed. A classic Scammer tactic is to post a great price on something without images hoping that somebody will bite before we take the thread down. It's all about greed folks.... if something sounds too good to be true, chances are it is. Strict enforcement of the requirement for images wouldn't solve this issue as we're not going to be around the very second a thread is made.

As always, buyer beware should be first and foremost in your mind. I certainly wouldn't be making any on-line purchases without verifying that the poster actually has the items in hand, and I hope that our members would follow suit to protect themselves from scammers.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and please keep the suggestions coming. We can't implement every suggestion, but we most certainly do read every one, and carefully consider how they will affect the current buy&sell threads.

Steve

I think this is a great idea. Too many people were abusing the grace period IMHO.

That's a start in the right direction Steve
Has there been any more thought given to having new (and current) members list a general location (province at least) in their profile mandatory? It would be very helpful and would save alot of PM's as well as let people decide whether they want to reply to an ad or not based on location. Sorry if I'm side tracking from the images issue I just feel its a small addition/change that would be a good thing for everyone.

Yes, it's something we're still looking at with an eye to what can be implemented. I for one would appreciate not having to post.... "it'd be easier for local buyers if we knew where you were" 3 or 4 times daily..... :)

Would it be difficult to place an asterisk (mandatory info) in the location box of the member sign up form?....not sure how you can get all current members who haven't listed a location to do so, that would seem to be a little trickier to accomplish, I'm sure the powers that be will come up with something

Heh... without giving anything away (wouldn't want to disapoint if it doesn't work out) we're looking into a few things that would help with the lowest common denominator being another rule for posting in the buy/sell threads. (I'm not a big fan of more rules though so we'll see what comes out of it..... :) ).

I hear that!...no one likes more rules, sounds good though, look forward to seeing how it all shapes up, I'm sure it'll be for the better for HWC and all members in the long run :)

Just a heads up for folks who've been posting in the buy/sell threads for quite a while and who may not have had a look at the rules since they were put up initially.......

A few months back the staff had a discussion about what impact EULAs had on the reselling of software (especially OS) and the general consensus (with Gav getting the final say... :) ) was that even if it wasn't specifically forbidden, in most EULAs it was certainly a gray enough area to be a cause of concern for us.

With that in mind, Gav added a rule removing software from the list of things we'll allow to be sold on the site.

Once again, thanks for reading through this, and we appreciate your efforts as a community towards making our buy&sell threads a success.

BTW..... If you're one of the folks who recieved a PM on this subject today..... This thread isn't directed in any way towards you. :)

Just a heads up to folks to let them know that we're aware of the attached images issues. Not sure where we're at though WRT if those images actually made it over to the new server so please bear with us until we get it sorted out.
