You might get a better response if you list what resolution your buddy plans to game at, and what kind of setup he's currently running.

Technically, he could play the game with this:

- Pentium 4 3.0GHz
- 1 GB RAM
- 128 MB, Shader model 2.0, ATI 9600, NVIDIA 6600 or better.

Also, what kind of price range are you looking at?

haha sorry. tbh i don't really have that much info on his rig. i'll find out and post back
price range around 80-150.
1680 x 1050 is his reso - i think he'll be playing his game at that as well.

Typically if you want to run game"s at very high resolution"s you should consider a lot of memory on the video card .No lower then a 512 mg,But a 1 gig would be perfect .

Remember that L4D (and any other Source-based variant) relies heavily on the cpu. I'll bet that with a decently-clocked dual core and 8800gt/9800gt he would be happy. You'd have to ask these other fellows how their 9600GT's fared (or look-up benchmarks). Another thing to consider for your friend is that if he has a SLI-capable motherboard, 9600GT's have been shown to scale more than 200% at times when run in SLI (yes, double the framerate).

I'm on 1440x900, and with 8xAA and 16AF, etc, etc, runs just fine. Obviously you'll have to turn some down for higher res, though.

L4D is not really that demanding of a game. Remember it's based on the same engine as HL2. I play it at all max settings on a e6660 @3.6/ HD3870/ 4 GB ddr2 1066 in vista x64 vsync turned on and I'm solid at 60 frames. If I turned off vsync I imagine I'd be well above 60. Also I have mutli core rendering turned off. Honestly, you could probably play this game on a 3850 no problems.
