Technically it's only an adapter for the plug to fit, and doesn't provide any power boost.

I think it's for those PSUs that don't have the proper PCI-e 8pin plug. (AKA the notch is off)

Yup, the PCIE connectors on my HX520 didn't fit in the slot due to the cover, so had to use the adapter.
