Default Canadian Politicians Negotiate to Join ACTA, Will Criminalize CD Copies, iPods at Bor

Here is some disturbing news...There is a move afoot to have storage devices searched and possibly seized with ensuing fines for infringed copyright material when crossing certain international borders.

Yeah I saw that.

I'm not too concerned... as much as they want to say that they'll be looking for stuff like pirated songs/music at the border, it's not only impossible due to time contraints, it's also something we wouldn't need to be concerned with unless we're packing multiple burnt copies.

We still have fair use rights in Canada which would make it virtually impossible for a border guard to know if you owned the content on your I-Pod and were just using a legal backup copy of it.

Thumbs down Not Right

The only thing that I'm concerned about is the following statement.

"It would be at the discretion of the border agents to determine what infringement is and what isn't. Under the new act, even legally copied DVDs or CDs would be open to scrutiny."

The problem is that if you happen to catch a guard on a bad day, you risk having your laptop destroyed.

It has been my experience, that you would have very little legal recourse that was not cost prohibitive should you find yourself in this situation. IMHO it puts too much power into the hands of untrained people. I don't believe that they have a right to access my digital documents or media without a search warrant.

This is absolutely not gonna fly.

Whose to say that copied cd in my truck isn't one I own at home and don't want it destroyed when travelling?

I'd bet every single person has something on their PC that they didn't pay for.

I see no problem with this. If you know you are crossing the border then take anything out of your possession that is not legal in another country. If you are stupid enough to get caught then Darwin says it was meant to be.

It's just more police state bull.....have no doubt they will make it fly unless we speak up against.
If this becomes standard procedure at the border, they're gonna go on a hardware destroying spree guaranteed.

Why are we getting so dam ameriKan?

I agree with b1lk1..don't haul your pirate copies across the border if you wanna be sure you'll still have them when you get back.

Nope.

I go out of my way to find open source apps which do what I need, and I pay for napster for my music downloads.

Excuse my ignorance but how does one prove that the songs on my ipod/laptop/phone/whatever are pirated? All the music on my devices were ripped from CDs I bought, paid for downloads or legit free downloads. If some overweight, tight pants, police academy drop out is going through my song list... how the hell would he/she know?
