Just a quick update to say that I'm happy so far with spotify as a streaming solution for use through kodi. I tried comparing a Flac NIN song with it's streaming spotify twin and couldn't discern a big difference between the two other than slightly different output levels.

My kit's by no means audiophile quality, but my polk monitors aren't too shabby either.

They need to fix their bloody software first. They're still focussed strongly on mobile and options/features for outputting directly to receivers from physically connected devices (instead of streaming to those receivers from mobile devices which I'm sure isn't optimal quality) still needs a lot of work.

We'll see how it goes, but it looks like the folks at spotify corporate are actively breaking third party access to their authentication servers. The Kodi spotify app has been up and down several times over the last few days and it sounds like they're actively playing whack-a-mole with the dev when he fixes issues the most recent version.

Spotify is useless to me if I can't use the kodi plugin so they'll lose my sub if they keep it up.

Just wondering - why Kodi? I don't think that's a supported Spotify platform, so it's always going to be iffy.

Chromecast or Chromecast Audio may be better suited? Or a Roku if you want a remote control.

I tried Roku originally..... I think the CIA is probably using that interface on prisoners during enhanced interrogation techniques... They don't even have functioning playlists any more.

It's pretty much Kodi or nothing for my usage scenario.

First and foremost is the ability to output to a specific audio device separate from my PC's default. I play music through to my receiver while still using speakers for all other PC functions. Without that ability, I have absolutely no use for a streaming service. This is strictly an audio receiver... it's not connected to a screen that I'd be able to monitor/control the music from.

Secondly... I need to be able to control the app separate from the PC controls while other applications have primary control of the PC and screen. I use a kodi remote app on a cheezy android phone for that function.

And finally.... I use kodi's visualizations while exercising. Helps me zone out.... ;)

Ultimately though... if they indeed are actively breaking this functionality I'll cancel my subscription.

edit: From what I've seen pretty much all of the third party hardware apps are next to useless so it would still come down to being able to control the PC app remotely if it was able to send a decent quality signal to a separate device.

You should be using Yatse. Definitely the best Kodi remote app for Android.

320kbps isn't lossless but its pretty high quality.

I'm very happy w/ Google Music. Although I've never tried anything else. I've got no issues w/ the Chrome plugin for playback in Windows. I don't stream in my vehicle. But everything I thumb up while @ home gets automatically downloaded to my phone instantly @ 'high quality'. I will admit the Google Music app on Android TV / Nvidia Shield is absolutely terrible. Like unusable. I uninstalled it as I'd be watching videos in SPMC, I'd pause the show, start playback again, and all of a sudden music is blaring twice as loud being played from Google Music w/o any way to pause it without going to the google music app. However streaming from my phone to the Shield works awesome.

Have you tried Kore recently? It's a completely different "official" kodi remote than the one I tried years ago. My usage is limited to audio control so maybe yatse has better functionality for video etc... but it's more than sufficient for my audio needs. The only annoying bit is that you have to track down and install bonjour for it to work.

As far as google music goes.... I'm not sure they've got any kind of functionality that'd resolve my issues with spotify, but I'll give them another look.

I've never been a fan for Kodi for a music library so my experience is just video. I just did try it though. Interface is IMO seriously lacking when it comes to the TV and Movie sections. No recently added section, WTF? I see they finally added the capability to pause the media when you get a call. Yatse had that in like 2012, Kore was added June 2016 . Yatse is IMHO the best Android app I've used. Gets updates all the time, Kore was last updated in February. Yatse supports Kodi, Plex, Emby all natively. And can cast to Plex or Chromecasts. Although all of this is probably irrelavant to you .

You shouldn't need Bonjour unless you are using an iPhone (or another Apple computer) and you are using Airplay to stream to Kodi. Kodi uses HTTP as a web remote now.
