My System Specs

Default

They sit about 5.5' apart on my desk and I sit about 35-40cm "in front" of them in the middle of the two.

Really, I am the most bummed about the performance at quiet volumes as that is most of the reason I decided to go for a higher end speaker in the first place. I was expecting better from everything I had read about them from everyone else, but it seems I am too spoiled by my HD650s

Too spoiled indeed ;)

It's hard to beat headphones in this regard. The A5+ won't show their potential, when you sit close to them. This is something that bothers me a bit but I move around a lot in the apartment while listening to music, or watch movies, and for that they are great.

Sucks that you are bummed out about their performance, but I hope they grow on you with time. ;)

True, you may indeed be spoiled by the Senns. At your price point you may have been better served by the Edifier S330D or the S730.

There is one problem that is bugging me. If your speaker are 5.5' apart and you are only just over a foot away from them they aren't going to sound their best. Here is an fairly good article to read (if you are interested in learning a bit start at 3.1, otherwise go to 3.2)

Near-Fields Handbook | Sweetwater.com

That may really help in getting a better sound from them.

That's an excellent link!
It covers basically everything one should know about placement.
Unless you one of the people that is willing to redecorate their apartment to accommodate certain speakers.

Hope it helps with getting the best out of those speakers. Of course we can always get into room treatments as your room may be severely impacting the sound but that's probably a bit of overkill :)
