Got a set of edifier powered studio monitors for about $100 and couldn't be happier.

Sound quality is much better than any cheap 5.1's I've used or heard, has plenty of bottom end and are plenty loud enough too even though they are near - field speakers.
Clearer setting them directed at you within a meter or so but they do have the power to carry much farther and fill reasonably big rooms.

I got the Edifier R2000T and it's well reviewed too (Especially for price- quality / performance)

Contemplating C2XD | Edifier since Edifer is known for good speakers, so I've been told and I can feed it optical.

You should get a DAC+AMP (Digital Audio Converter and Amplifier) and have it override your motherboard's audio codec and feed your speakers.

Doesn't matter if it's a sound card, USB DAC+AMP, receiver or any solution as It's your choice and I don't know the size of your motherboard or if it's a laptop, but if you are starting to take notice of the audio quality in your gaming experience, then this is the direction that will give you the best results.

BTW, the Logitech Z506 is a fine speaker, if your intention is to have an internal bleeding in your ear. (Sarcasm) The Z906 is much better.

Guys, I'm not looking to spend 200-300 on a set of speakers, as mentioned in the OP, nor am I looking to buy a DAC + AMP either.

Your big issue with speakers is that its a subjectional area that everyone is going to have a different opinion on.

You can't even go into a store and see how they will sound cause the acoustics would be VERY different than the location you live.

Cant vouch for their smaller speakers or 2.1's but the powered monitors are very good for the price.
