Totally depends on your speakers / headset

If you have sub $100 headset (even then cost is no guarantee that they are good quality) then no, use on-board (depends on the board too)

On board sound (i guess depending on mobo) isn't all that bad so far as I've seen. However the limitations are there. If you have a premium setup then yeah you will hear the difference.... if not than the difference will be hard to notice.

I have been using dedicated sound cards in all my PCs since the early 2000's. Every time I build a new computer I would give the onboard a try because reviews and sources claim that modern onboard sound is much improved etc etc, but I always end up going back to my dedicated sound cards. My current Auzentech Xplosion is quite a few years old but it sounds miles ahead of all my onboard ones.

I do however like the onboard sound of my Macbook Pro 15 Retina.

I say get a decent sound card with analog connections. Even crap speakers sound better.

I buy high(er) end motherboards with good onboard sound and I am very impressed with the quality. The only reason I bought a sound card was for my Sennheiser HD650 as they won't run properly off onboard audio. I have the "premium" zonar essence STX or whatever (about $200) and I wouldn't say there is a huge leap. Don't forget that everyone has "different ears" and some people are much more sensitive than others and will hear the benefit.

I haven't used a sound card in awhile now mind you I do use head phones . I remember back in the 1990s I had a few people over and had allot of music on my PC which had 2.1 speekers as the night got on and the drinking got heavy the music got louder and with this the music also started to slowdown becasue of the draw I guess , I did fix the problem by plugging my PC into my 700watt amp and then just turned the music down to say 1/4 on the PC and cranked it up on my amp and my house system never had a problem after that. I don't think that this would be the same problem now days
