If you have higher end headphones and speakers, it becomes a must.

But if you don't, then it's probably not worth the money.

Since this thread is still going on I will simply say this..

It all depends on what your needs are.

HTPC? Use the onboard HDMI, GPU HDMI or Optical out.
Headphones? Definitely or invest in a usb dac
Speakers? Eh.. This is a fairly subjective field and each person will hear differenly, play different things etc.
Gaming? Onboard is fine.

What onboard was 10 years ago compared to today is completely different and has comes miles ahead of its old bretheren.

Sorry but I'm finding it hard to take allot of what these guys are saying seriously. Who buys a sound card and doesn't connect the fp audio... hell who buys a sound card without trying the back first..

On-board vs dedicated sound card on decent speakers or cans and you will hear the difference. And I'm not talking about software manipulation either. And technically Digital may be better than valve..
But think about it.. the greatest sounding guitar amps in the world are all valve.

Gotta laugh at the notion of "listen the way it was recorded" "valves do bad things to make it sound better".. WTF, who cares if it's the way the artist wanted, who cares if it does "bad things", get your sound how YOU like it and enjoy it and do it any way you can.

Sound like style etc is all about personal preference... you'll never have 2 people go to an eq and have it set the same way, it's proof enough for me.

My preference is for dedicated soundcard. This arises from my experiences nearly a decade ago when onboard sound was cr*p. I'm sure they're eons ahead of where they were now but I've always kept the preference. In the end it really depends on whether you're using quality cans or speakers. I use Logitech Z2300s that are pretty darn good and they do sound ever slightly better when connected to my soundcard.

I use the onboard with my 5.1 Speakers and the Soundcard (X-Fi) with my 5.1 Headphones.
