My System Specs

Default Is there a good quality 7.1 headset?

Heya, I have a tall order. I want a single pair of cans that can do 7.1 virtual surround and also has a mini stereo plug so i can use my 1/4'' adapter and hook it up to some sound equipment.

I would also need good quality drivers with a neutral bias.

Is this a pipe dream for 200 bucks or less?

The 7.1 virtual is really down to your sound card rather than your headset. IMO, typically the "true" 7.1 sound headphones tend to suck because for an equivalent price you are either getting 2 good drivers or 10 crappy drivers in your headset.

There are products like the Orion Pro which have a usb 7.1 sound card included but I wouldn't call them great sounding. If it was me looking for good $200 headphones I would pick up Sennheiser 558s on sale at ncix right now and use my soundcard/mobo virtual surround.

The Creative Aura Live! headphones go for $80 with free shipping on Amazon.ca. They use the same drivers as the Denon D1001s. They have a good soundstage, detailed, can reach quite low and don't have any spikes in the frequency range. They're about as neutral as you're going to get under $200. They're also extremely comfortable.

FYI I have the Denon D2000s and they're similar to the D1001/Aura Live!, just a bit more refined. I'd suggest the D2000s but they're fairly rare now and the value has appreciated quite a bit.

+ 1 for cans.. Suggest you try before you buy (go to a store and listen to and try on as many pairs as you can.)

Then go for whatever suits you the most whether it's $50 or $200
