If all you want is 5.1, get a speaker set that uses the spdif on your mobo. There will be absolutely no sound difference. It's only if you need analogue output that it matters and even then the gains you get for that money is minimal due to the way windows 7 works.

I'm not really up on the sub $300 market but the one name that keeps popping up over and over are the Edifiers. That's probably your best bet if you can't listen to them in the store.

The Eddifers mentioned only do analog in. Which would mean I should be using proper sound card rather then analog out from what my mobo has on it. It's almost looking like a HTIB with some price matching can get about the same sensitivity and/or wattage then some of these desktop speakers can, which is a little disappointing.

How about getting a decent used receiver off of CL and a sattelite kit as well?

I have a decent receiver and speakers, my problem is the fact that I can't seem to get the problem it has fixed. I could go with a new receiver in itself however the only way I think i can sell my current receiver is with my current speakers. Hence my loop here.
