Honestly from my experience with sound cards I've been happy with anything that is NOT powered by creative.

There is somebody selling an Auzentech Meridian-X 7.1 card in BST forums now for $60 which wouldn't be a bad pickup.

The Xonar Xense or Xonar Phoebus are two of the best cards available today. I have both cards, but I prefer the Xense. If you can find the Xense without the headphones that come with it,go for it. Failing that, the Phoebus will do everything you want in a good sound card. Both are Super sound cards.

I have M-Audio AV40's and Sennheiser cans and I'm quite happy with them. I'm not into 5.1 these days.

As I stated before, I hate Cans, prefer real speakers for real 5.1.

I wont suggest speakers since all i can suggest is 2.1 but I would take a look at HT Omega for sound cards.... pricey but they make a very quality product

For example: Newegg.ca - HT | OMEGA eClaro 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Express x1 Interface Sound Card
the one ive used before

I hear you. Just stating what I like.

For my 5.1 set up Im using a Denon AVR with a Velodyne sub. I use some spherex Sattelites from an old xbox 360 setup. They sound fantastic.

Prior to this I gad a logitech z-5500 kit.

Sub $300 I have no idea.

The eddy S550s are very sweet.

Soundcard.... Xense / Phoebus for games. Essence STX if music is your main priority.

Since he's looking to game, I have to ask if all issues with compatibility are resolved with the current batch of ASUS cards... I've currently got an older model that has issues in some games with the "GX" mode which hasn't been updated in quite some time (there are some modded non manufacturer drivers apparently).

Hmm was slightly hoping for speakers that came in about 100$ less then those but it doesn't seem like that they are out there. It's either bargain sub 100$ or these 350$ monsters out there.

Unfortunately those two there are Cans sound cards as both come with headphone amps. Don't want to waste money on a feature that drives up the price that I'l never use.
