Default Stereo Reciever and Speakers

So i need some direction on stereo products as most of my speaker configurations have been 5.1 or 7.1 i haven't had much experience in that area. Budget is around $700 not including taxes. Basically i have a need for a stereo on the main floor of my house but my home theatre is in the basement. Any pointers or direction would be helpful. However don't recommend sony as their reciever lines are crap compared to the brands i am used to (Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, etc)

Used is your friend.

Canuck Audio Mart Canada's Largest Online Hifi, Audio & Home Theater Classifieds

Your choice of components will depend about your musical taste. I bought a set of Energy 701s and a Rotel receiver for less than 500$.

Is this for a PC or no? If so your best bet would likely to go w/ a pair of good amplified speakers. KRK RP8G2 or maybe Audioengine A5's. Then whatever soundcard.

Used is always a great way to go. I'm sure you won't have too hard a time finding an inexpensive high quality amp (Rotel, Denon, NAD, Marantz etc).

As for speakers, I've been in love with Angstrom speakers since I first heard them (I also used to be a person who didn't think bookshelf speakers were worth even looking at haha). I know it's subjective but I really haven't heard anything near as good in the same price range. Check out the Reference Cabinet section Loud Speakers | Angstrom Loudspeakers

Not sure where you live but if you are anywhere near the GTA you can contact them and get some b stock for a great price and probably even get to go for a listening session at their office in Markham. The Mod 4's are about $1000 but I got a pair of their B stock for somewhere around half that price. The Mod 1's retail for $500 give or take and can probably be had for a bit less. My B-stock's were immaculate...not a scratch on them. They use silk dome tweeters and Vifa drivers in all the Mod series speakers.

Kidding aside, check out the Klipsch at Auditronic. I'd say they are one of the cheaper quality brands out there and go up to Paradigm if you like their sound.

Though buying used will always save you some cash, make sure you have a good listen to it. Bring a cd that you are familiar with.

Yamaha and Pioneer receivers are good too.
