But the quality of the speakers is one of the most important factors in sound quality. Can a sound card provide the juice to drive quality speakers? You are not going to be able to run a even a mid range paradigm monitor set from an on board card.

In this case he's using PC speakers, so it's not necessary to consider dedicated amplification

I don't think anyone runs non-amplified speakers from sound cards.

The setup would go like this instead:

Sound card -- (analog or digital) --> Receiver w/Amp -> Speakers/Monitors
or
Sound card -- (analog or digital) --> Receiver -> Pre-amp -> Speakers/Monitors

and at that point you could, as argued in this thread, just go with onboard and SPDIF to the receiver.

I don't know why this thread is taking so long. With the op's speaker, any sound card with decent chip will work just as good. Don't waste to much for nothing.

^^^ What martin just said x9001.

OP has shitty speakers and does not need a $500,000 7.1 sound card. A decent $80-$100 one will be plenty and keep him pleased for much time.

And silk, plz. 5.1 and 7.1 are not even related to OP's setup. He runs a 2.1 setup. If that is what he wants then that is all good. I myself run a 2.1 setup using a receiver, some speakers and a sub from a Z-2300 wired up with a custom controller to run independently. (I do not use the Z-2300 satellites because they are trash imo, but that is just my opinion. OP and some other people I know love their Z-2300 speakers. it is just a matter of taste.)

Yea that is why I was all confused at the hate for spdif. I notice a lot of people are going on-board spdif -> external DAC -> amp ->speakers/headphones.

As for the OP's question. Lineout --> to the z2300. since there is no digital input on those speakers.

Indeed, to be honest, most consumers won't even care and will settle with on-board sound.

Me personally though, am running analogue stereo out of my D2X into the Schiit Asgard. However I'm thinking of replacing the D2X with an external DAC solution for native RCA output (I hate adapters)
