They're definitely different from the 840s. More controlled bass (some would say less), and sounds noticeably brighter than the 840 (which I yearned for). Overall I would say it's a more balanced set of cans since the old 840s sounded dark, and bassy at times.

Well this sucks :(

I was going to purchase the SRH940's by the end of this week, but I recently discovered my sound card suffers from EMI feedback whenever I'm gaming. So it looks like I'll have to get a new card now too

This whole audiophile thing isn't working out too well for me, lol...

Also, did you read my prior post about the 940's? Based upon your original post, I'm not sure they're what you're looking for.

Well, after reading that review on Headfonia, it seems that they'd be quite the upgrade considering they compete with the HD800's in terms of clarity in detail. I'm not really THAT much of a basshead, really; I just want something that's clear and concise in terms of bass hits, but with a little more oomph than the HD555's.

As for the audiophile hobby being an expenditure blackhole, you got that right. I borked my system when trying to install an Essence STX, so now I'm out of a computer too But I'm looking at this on the bright side; at least this means I now have a reason to upgrade

Okay, finally got it working again So now I'm back in the market for new headphones.

Upon looking at the Fischer Audio FA-011 that Jackquelegs recommended, I also found the FA-003 headphones. It seems to be quite the headphone, considering all the reviews down at Head-Fi, and it also looks like something that would suit my tastes.

What do you think? Should I go for the SRH940, or look into waiting (since it's not in stock anywhere) for the FA-003?

Just to update: I got the FA-003's from GD-Audiobase, and I absolutely adore them. When I first got them, everything sounded pretty good, but the bass and midbass was really tight and conservative upon first impression.

Just ran them through my playlists last night, and boy, did it open up! Everything sounds so amazing! Trebles are nice and pronounced (but not overpowering or 'crisp'), mids are liquid smooth, and the bass... Oh, the bass is just so perfect! The soundstage on these things aren't as big as the 555's though, but not so much as to want to switch back.

HIGHLY recommended for those looking to upgrade their HD555's! I can't even describe how amazing these cans are!

The FA003s are fantastic cans, and I'm very tempted to order a pair of 002OW in the near future! Glad you're liking them. They are closed cans, so soundstage is naturally not as good as the HD555s

Very nice. The wood cups on those 002W's should make a decent improvement on the SQ, as far as I've seen down on Head-Fi. But I can't imagine it getting that much better from what I've been hearing through these cans lol.
