My System Specs

Default Wife Ordered The Xonar Xense.

With all the questions I had regarding my sound card and any choices I had for a new card,my Wife made the decision for me.She ordered the Xense after reading some reviews and I believe she made a very good choice. I have not read anything negative about this card at all. Does anyone here have this card? Any comments from users? I don't know about the head phones that come packaged with the card. It appears that is the only way they sell it. I guess I can hang on to the headphones for spares as I am a 5.1 analog believer for truer surround. As many of the members here know, I own a set of Psykos which are 5.1 analog only. Analog for me all the way! I'd like to hear from you. Thanks.

You could've got the Xonar Essance STX which doesn't come with headphones for less. The PC350 are also analog... And I'm a firm believer in not using 5.1 for headphones.

The STX is 2.1 only and (IIRC) does not have the header for the h6a 7.1 expansion card. He'd need the PCI ST version to get 7.1 Might be wrong though on that. Been awhile since I looked at the STX.

Slik, your wife is getting you a very good card. One could argue that a xonar ST w/ H6A 7.1 daughter card would be better, but since you wont be using the dedicated heaphone port I doubt most peeps would be able to tell the difference via 5.1 analog ports. As for price dif, with the ST you'd NEED to buy the H6a daughter card to get 7.1 so the price dif is probably also small, and you wont be blocking another port to get 7.1 sound. :)

YMMV but sell the pc350s and enjoy your setup. I probably will be getting the Xonar Xense myself..unless I decide the hassle of the daughter card is worth it and go for the ST + H6A. :)~

I don't know why you are a non believer in 5.1 headphones. With technology being what it is today, and with a true 5.1 set of headphones, why not? Both me and my wife have a set of Psyko 5.1s and they really really work. Many people shy away from new technology and Psyko is the newest! I find it hard to believe that members on this forum would EVER be reluctant to embrace new tech. of any kind. I know you are not afraid of new tech.it's that you are such a Firm believer. I know others here have tried the Psykos or other 5.1s and it would sure be nice to hear from them. After all, this is Hardware Canucks! Opinions are appreciated as always. By the way, ROBSCIX says the PC 350s are Stereo analog only. For 5.1 I think you need Dolby Digital. Thank you.

Because a good set of 2 channel headphones can have juts as good imaging as 5.1 headphones.

Have you ever tried a GOOD set of 5.1s? I don't mean a set with three or four speakers in each cup, I mean a set of cans like Psyko with 5 speakers in the headband with a unique design that allows for a more "desk top" 5.1 surround sound. If I had not tried them, I too would be a little leery. After all, they cost $300.00. I took the plunge however, and I am not sorry one bit. Honest my friend. These things are good. My wife would echo my comments. Thanks and Take care.

I tested the PA 5.1s against a pair of HD555s. In most situations AFTER tweaking the sound profile in games (and ONLY games) was indeed noticeably better with the PA5.1s. In some other games it was worse and some others it was a toss up. TBH I prefer real 5.1 speakers to any cans but the PA5.1s...arent half bad. Not 3 bills great...but not bad. :)

Are you talking better sound quality or better audio positioning? Also, yes the STX is more for headphones which is why it has a built in headphone amp in which case all you need is 2.1. Not saying the sound quality on the Xense will be bad or anything, but Slik was saying how he didn't really need the included headphones.

Xense has a built in headphone amp to. ;)
But is also uses a different burr brown DAC for the headphones. 1796 vs 1792A with dif SNR (IIRC 123dbA vs 127dba when in dual channel mode) but still very decent. :)

The PA's provide a better surround sound stage. Sound "quality" is very variable from person to person but in games the PAs sometimes won. Sometimes lost. In everything NON gaming related they get their arse handed to them by even a lower end Weston 1's let alone the HD555s. I dont want to even rember what they do to T. Monk and Coltrane. :(
