Default HD Audio in Linux (Radeon 5XXX)

I'dd like to know if it's possible to use the audio through HDMI function of the radon 5XXX cards in linux ?
I'dd set it up for an HTPC using Ubuntu + XBMC + ATi 5xxx card.

I'm fairly sure you can download the linux realtek drivers for the radeon card and it will work fine. I'd wait for someone to confirm they'd done it before however.
Just a heads up.... You may have one issue you may find with XBMC is lack of hardware acceleration for ATI cards. Not sure what you have for a processor but 1080P is fairly demanding without hardware acceleration. I think its on the verge of release/middle of development but it takes quite a bit of messing around with XBMC nightly builds and codecs to get ATI hardware acceleration to work, and still occasionally flaky. I'm using a X2 4400 it wasnt quite enough to decode 1080. 720 and down was fine.

I have a 4200+.. I also have a 8500Gt laying around but it doesn't carry audio through hdmi.. but i'm pretty sure it would help more than an ati card on linux..

Doesn't your 8500gt have the two prong digital input on it for that?

If it has it, its probaby 2 prongs in the top left corner of your card.

Its unfortunate, ATI should get together with XBMC and work out exactly what is required to make the hardware work. The 5450 is cheap, DX11, and 7.1 capable (if that matters to you) .... and much tidier than spdif wires to the card. In ATI's defense it works with most any other software.
