Default Sound card for Sennheiser HD555
These are my first set of decent headphones and im blown away. Iv'e read though that im holding them back w/o a decent sound card. I have never bought a sound card before and have no clue whats what.

I use the headphones for gaming and music. From what i read these are what people seem to recommend :

AuzenTech Forte
HT Omega Striker
Asus Xonar




I also read somewhere that the xfi cards are better for gaming but sound quality deserves a lot to be desired.

Go for the Forte..

I have an X-Fi xtreme gamer... I actually prefer it for music over the Forte.. That's me though.

And yes, your headphones will come alive with a sound card... you think they're nice now? You're in for a treat..

Asus Xonar all the way, they are extremely good for subjective tests.

Xonar Essence STX (Pci-E) and ST (PCI) are the best in stereo reproduction.. none of the other ones match it... If you however need analog 5.1 sound then the ST with a daughter card expansion is your only choice..

Hmm the stx is getting up there for price but you know what i never imagined paying 100+ for headphones and im not regretting it at all. Thanks for the help.

P.S. the lowest price i can see the stx at is $191

I payed over a 1000 for mine... you get what you pay for ;) Pair it up with a great source (the stx is a step in the right direction) and all of a sudden all your favorite albums sound like you're hearing them for the first time... its a GREAT experience

I really like my AuzenTech Forte, especially with my Sennheiser PC-350's. I run a digital Optical cable to me Edirol MA-15D Speakers for general use while my PC-350's are plugged into the Card's analog connection (Thus using Headphone Amp) and I just toggle my default sound back and forth between Optical/Digital (Edirol's) and Analog (PC-350's) works great :)

Using my HD 555s plugged into an Onkyo SR-605 receiver on an optical digital connection from my onboard sound :p

I love these headphones.
