Onkyo's are great. Sorry but Sony makes a garbage consumer product. If it's not a TV then it should not be in your living-room. Sony's studio and commercial grade equipment is exceptional tho... ask anyone who works at a TV station.

Other notables are Yamaha and Pioneer. I had the polk 10" sub but gave it away to a relative. It was fine but i expected much better. I've never had a down-firing sub woofer but sub placement it HUGE if you want the best possible punch from a side firing sub. Corner facing in a structural part of the room, spaced a foot out from either wall. I run a 12" and it rattles the medicine cabinet in the bathroom down the hall.

another sub notable is JBL if you can find them in your budget.

so please what about that older model onkyo receiver i linked to-yay or nay/
While I'm not a overly huge fan of stuff mass produced that goes into big box stores Onkyo is actually still one of the better brands to buy in this sense. Pioneer and Yamaha are both good brands to look at as well.

An 8" sub will be good to, I personally feel that in small areas you don't need a big sub as you won't feel it properly anyways.

The larger the sub the further away you need to be to feel it.

The Onkyo TX-SR505 is a pretty decent receiver for the money. I am sure you will be very happy with it when using it w/ analog and the Prelude.

To be honest, I am currently having a hard time with what I should do about my sound system.

I am on Gigaworks S750, and the thing's only true weakness is that it's basically a Cambridge Soundwork Newton system paired with a Basscube, BUT the center speaker's a satellite speaker really. As such, I need to find myself something that's about as big and as easy to mount as a bookshelf (as in nail over the wall and presto) and have that same timbre...

One idea I had is to try to chain up 2 satellites in parallel and draw from the same center speaker output instead...

You don't want to use an optical cable. Analog will sound considerably better. If you plan on using optical, you might as well sell off the Prelude as it will become useless.

You want 3.5mm to RCA cables.

Like these
For only $0.54 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 3.5mm Stereo Plug/2 RCA Plug cable - 6ft | 3.5mm/RCA Audio Cables
