Internet Radio; Need Some Help

After 5 years of using XM satellite radio, I have decided to kick it to the curb after the constant dumbing down of my favorite stations. I want to make the switch to internet radio but because of my previous obsession with XM, I will admit to being in the dark about alot of aspects regarding IR.

Since I listen to XM at work quite a bit and the internet radio stations are blocked, I want to record the station during the day and then upload the audio files to my media player (a Cowon D2).

So, here are my questions (I know I will have others):

- Without live streaming, what is the best way to get what the internet radio station plays onto my media player? Use an internet radio recording program?

- If the answer to the above question is to use one of those recording programs, which one would you recommend?

- What should I convert the audio files into? In the past I used Ogg Vorbis but is there something else?

i don't convert anything all i use is winamp and streamripper. ( but this is live streaming as you see i work from home so the radio playing all day and recording it is not a big deal). hope that helps a little.

So you use Winamp to play the stream and the Streamripper in the background to record it? I assume Streamripper breaks the stream into separate tracks as well?

that's right. you can set it to split the song/shows or you can just record the whole thing simple and it works

What format will it save the songs in?

I have used this for video, and the support website says it works for audio:
WM Downloader - Capture mms/wm-rtsp/http stream from online radio stations and saving it to hd. I only used it a few times, worked great. I believe its an eval version so it gingerbee's solution works and is free then use his. If it does not work for ya give wm downloader a shot.

Your place of work deliberately blocks radio broadcasts? I have used Ultrasurf and Gpass to circumvent proxies at work, and they have worked fine for streaming media (I had permission to bypass the proxy, btw). I found Gpass to work a little better for media.

Pretty heavy security here on the computers so we can't even install software. ;)

No install needed...runs off USB key, and invokes default browser....
