Default Speakers: recommendations

I'd like to get my g/f a good set of 2.1 speakers.
Preferably under $100 to $200 maximum. Sound quality is important.
Don't want to end up with the tin sound you get from cheap plastic on the high end sounds, or that mufflie distorted low end bass.

Ofcourse she needs/wants something sexy/cool looking too.

Please send me some good recommendations.
Thanks a lot all!

NCIX.com - Buy M-AUDIO Studiophile AV40 Desktop 2.0 Speaker System 40W RMS Black - 9900-52155-00 In Canada.

I have these and they are fantastic. Will blow most 100-200W systems out of the water. Plus no hefty sub to lug around.

I bought my wife a pair of these and she really enjoyed them. They beat all my old Altec Lansing speakers but they can't compete with my Klipsch Promedia V2.400

When found on sale they give great "bang for your buck".... usually around the $130 mark.

NCIX.com - Buy Logitech Z-2300 Speaker System 2.1 200WRMS 400W 8IN Subwoofer - 970118-0403 In Canada.

I got a new pair of the Z-2300's at Factory Direct for $99. You might be able to find a pair for that price there.

The Logitechs aren't a bad speaker for the price, but they are overly bassy. If a person's tastes tend towards dropping the largest subs into the trunk of their car, with the rest of the audio spectrum not high on their list of concerns, then the Logitechs are a great choice. Otherwise I'd consider some of the other suggestions. :)

I'd agree with that statement. The two satellites don't seem to have a great range and sound a bit "dead" at the high end compared to my Klipsch's. But.... at the sale prices these things come at they are certainly not bad. Drop the bass from the "normal" setting and it helps balance it out a bit.

It really depends if said person buying them thinks they are an audiophile or not.

DON'T get the Z Cinema. A very very average speaker for an above average (as far as 2.1 speakers go) price.

If you don't need to fill a big room with sound, then you can give Soundstick II a try. It has the whole transparent look to it which girls (and guys) tend to like, and the sound's not bad.
