As most have suggested, Kaspersky or NOD32 are my recommendations as well. I use Kaspersky personally; great protection and light on resources.

How about none

I had NOD32 before, tried out Kaspersky and didn't like it (I get a free license with my Maximus Formula). Kaspersky seems to have a bunch of pesky pop-ups if you leave all their protection enabled. I've since to reinstall an antivirus though...

None is fine if you know what you are doing but I'm sure most people here would not recommend it at all. I've personally gone years without an antivirus or firewall without any problems whatsoever. I'll do an online scan here and there and haven't found anything yet.

I'd also highly recomment Kaspersky or NOD32.

I got really tired of all the AV software out there, esp Norton - I haven't liked a Norton program in almost a decade now.. their footprint is far too huge and I have found all their software so unreliable and invasive and clunky to use.

I used AVG for awhile, but I found it's scan to be a bit dated and the software wasn't very polished to me..

I now switched and pay yearly for Kaspersky and it is amazing. I like it because every year you renew the price gets cheaper and cheaper. I also use Threatfire in conjunction and it's great too.

Default Avast - Good news

I'm using Avast now and so far I've seen no problems and it's even 64 bit native to boot. Great program from what I can see.

None is fine if you know what you're doing, you don't let anyone else use your computer, and you don't store any valuable data (or do routine backups of valuable data) ...

Most of us don't have that luxury, so a good anti-virus is a necessity to protect our time and data.

As for pop-ups from Kaspersky, I only really notice that Kaspersky gives a lot of pop-ups if you are connected directly to your modem (no hardware firewall in between); in that case, you should just click the down-arrow at the top-left corner of the pop-up box and click "Don't show this message again." It will then block attempts to access your computer automatically without annoying you.
