AVG Free is pretty much the best possible free AV and it smokes anything Symantec or McAfee can produce. Plus it doesn't hog resources. NOD32 is OK, but I have has it miss stuff AVG gets. I would really strongly suggest NOT using Norton/McAfee and give either AVG or Avast your "business".

Here's a link to the norton removal tool.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Rem...NRT_d4749.html

It's really the only way to purge your system of Norton's other than a full reload (and I'm not even sure that will work unless you ensure a format of the MBR).

On another note.....

I haven't used it myself, but I keep hearing good things about the new (free as well) AVG Anti-Spam.

That said.... no AV or anti-spam is going to provide complete protection. The only real way to stay clean is to avoid sites you know are going to be infested (Warez comes to mind..... :) ).

One of my main reasons for providing computers to my children early on was to both keep their crapware off of my system, as well as teaching them about keeping their own systems clean.

My response to "I found this cool program dad... can I install it?" has been "Go right ahead.... but if it buggers up your system, don't think I'm going to jump on it to fix it right away"

Seems to have worked.... I have very few problems with their computers. :)

The reason I've shied away from the free online AV's so far is because of my very slow dial-up. I am just assuming that this would be a real hinderance-- Is this true?

I doubt it would make any real difference. Norton's needs to update virus defs the same as any other AV program.

You would still need to either schedule daily DL's, or make it a point to update while your are on-line.

Avg updates way faster than norton and if your not happy with it all you have to do is go to add and remove unlike norton where you have to use a remove utility lol. Btw avg's anti-spy utility is actually ewido which avg purchased and changed the name. I've used it for around 6 months and no problems yet. Also it dosen't take forever to scan your system:)
