Default Isopropyl Alcohol

So I'm going to be getting a new cpu cooler, and I stopped by the drugstore to get some isopropyl alcohol, which i hear is the best thing to use, but they only have 70% Is that enough or does anyone know where to get a higher percent?

It's fine - 95% is better though. When cleaning, simply wait a little while longer to make sure that the water has fully evaporated before applying the thermal paste.

The 70% isn't ideal as it has oil in it which will leave a film on the surface you are cleaning.

Double check with the drugstore (or check another one). I found mine at Wally mart.... :)

I assume this is to clean off the old gunk? The 70% should be just fine, just make sure it's only isopropyl and not rubbing compound as I think sswilson is refering to since that has extra junk in it. I would imagine acetone (main ingredient in nail polish remover) would probably work well to, Crappy Tire sells the pure stuff but I think plain old nail polish remover would be fine if it isn't laced with perfumes and such. Be aware that acetone doesn't play nice with all plastics.

Same Steve, it's the 99.9% Equate brand.

i found 99.9% at the local shopper's drug mart. The one on steeles between leslie & bayview (in toronto). I'm sure other shopper's drug marts carry the same one though since they're a chain store. thing about 99.9% is it evaporates much faster than 70%, so less waiting around.

I use 70%...works great, if it leaves oil, i can't see or feel it... and my temps are always good. It's an old bottle (5 y.o), but i have 2-90% bottles at the ready.

Edit: I don't always follow accepted procedure. I still spread my TIM's...i found no benefit to the rice grain and twist method, or the straight line up the middle method.

Yeah, my shoppers only had 70 percent and it would not surprise me about the whole drug making thing.

EDIT: Checked out walmart, they only had 70 and crappy tire didn't have it at all.

EDIT EDIT: Totally forgot we have a Rexall, they have 99 but they are currently sold out :( Hopefully they'll have it in by sunday.
