Default n00b Question!

Okay don't laugh, but I've always had the annoyance of not knowing exactly which way the fans blow! The logo side? Non logo side?? Bugging the hell out of me! lol Anyone know the general rule of thumb? I mean, other that plugging them in and testing directionality.

A lot of fans have faint arrows engraved on one side of the frame. One arrow tells you which way the air goes, the other indicates the direction of fan rotation. Not all do, however. Beyond that, just stick 'em on a space fan header or molex connector and see for yourself.

The side with the plastic support beams (not really sure what to call them) is the side the air blows out of. That's how I do it.

My Antec Tricools blow in the direction of the logo/support beams. Now that I know that (and felt it), I can now tell by looking at the fin which way they point to "scoop" the air and push it.

In my opinion that really is the best and only proper way to tell if the fan does not have markings. But in the end, you spend more time looking for the markings than you spend looking at the blades so it seems somewhat pointless to look for small arrows on the side to me.

The blades are not always fool proof. Highly dependent the direction of rotation.

I go with plugging them in myself. That being said

I just confirmed with all my fans in both rigs, 10 in all,and they all exhaust through the side with the suppor beams.

The support beams method doesn't always work..... my nocutua fans are opposite to what my Yate Loons are. :)

Look at the shape of the blades (assuming they aren't flat blades). The concave direction will be the direction the air moves. ( <= that side of the bracket is concave.

Another way for most fans (excluding the 3 blade Delta fans) is to spin the blades counterclockwise by hand and see which way it will push the air.

Arctic Cooling fans spin opposite to the norm too, I believe.
