Query on 3 pin fans.
 
Hello guys,
I'm planning on adding some case fans for my gaming rig...
procy : i5 2500K
mobo : Asus P8Z68-V
RAM : RipjawsX 8GB
GPU : 9800GT
PSU : Silent pro M600
Case : NZXT Gamma

My motherboard has 3*3 pin fan headers & 1*4 pin fan header(excluding 2*CPU fan headers).

My question is,
If i connect 3 fans(which has 3 pin headers & 4 pin molex) to the motherboard's 3 pin fan headers, will i be able to control the fan speed or at least the mobo itself regulates the fan with respect to the temperatures?

I am not sure about the fans being controlled through bios or third party software, But I can tell you this the motherboard will automatically adjust the fan speed to correspond with the temperature inside the case. Also if you don't already know (sorry if you do already know) you can always connect your fans directly to the power supply which will run at full speed.

A loud and annoying! well for me it is (for the molex) but for the mobo just fine

No you cannot, unless you use a third party fan controller, you cannot speed control fans who only have 3 pins from your motherboard. Those 3 pins are 12V, GND, and Speed sense/RPM reader. The fourth pin which isn't included is the PWM pin, which is the pin that allows the motherboard to control the speed of the fan. Third party fan controllers can change the speed of 3 pin fans because they down volt the fan, causing it to run slower.

Thanks for the explanation but i'm aware of it.

What exactly is the benefit of motherboard 3 pin fan headers over the 4 pin molex connectors ??

None really, actually it can be a downfall as the 3 pin fan headers do not supply typically as much current to the fans as per the 4 pin molex connectors. This means your fans will typically run a bit faster (or always at their full speed setting) if connected to molex rather then 3 pin fan header.

Check your BIOS settings to see if your motherboard supports fan speed control of non PWM fans. (typically fan control options Voltage versus PWM) Most Gigabyte boards and a lot of Asus/MSI boards offer this feature.

If you want the motherboard to regulate the speeds based on temperatures, you can use something like the Sunbeam Rheosmart controllers. Sunbeamtech Rheosmart PCI Fan Controller There are also a lot of fan controllers that feature temperature sensors that can be used to regulate fan speed.

ASUS has AI Suite II included with its P8 Cougar Point motherboards, which allows for fully adjustable temperature-based profiles for the chassis and CPU fans via PWM and voltage control. They can only be controlled in those two groups, however, and not individually. The PWR fan headers cannot be controlled. The details of how many fans can be controlled varies depending upon the model.

According to ASUS forum mods, the headers can supply a maximum of 1 amp at 12V.
