Best air cooler possible for I7 950

Hi All,

I am wondering what would be the best cooler for an I7 950. I currently have a megha installed with two scythe fans at 1900 rpm's each. At clock speed I run them at 1200 rpm's and at full load I get around 56 degrees. But when I over clock it to 4.2 ghz, I get around 80 degrees. I have an antec 1200 case and the room tempratures in low 20's.

Any suggestions? I would like to oc it to 4.2c and keep the temps under 72 if possible.

Noctua NH-D14 is by far the best air cooler currently out there (although i suspect the current thermal paste on ur prolimatech megahalems might not be well applied/good quality as those temps seem kinda high, also check if u can't get the same clocks stable at slightly lower vcore).

also the 1200 is somewhat of a dustmagnet (make sure things are clean inside ur rig)...

With a D-14 you may go down to 75'c , but 72'C is a huge target at 4,2 I will not say 80'C is high without knowing the core voltage

I know I cleaned the fans on them and removed the dust, actually washed the plastic filters for the intake fans. I thought so too with the thermal paste, I used mx4 thermal paste. I took it off and re-applied the paste but same temps. I was just reading about the H70, what do you think about that. I will try the lower vcore as well tonight. See I had been using an i5 750 and for that I was using titan fenrir and at 4.2 ghz at 1.36v i never hit 70 ever. But I do know it's hyper threaded for the I7 but I dont like temps hitting 80's that is HOTTTTTTTTTT.

Any suggestions on maybe thermal paste?

its 1.35v I am not at home so I cant tell you exactly.

never actually had to OC a nehalem chip but from what i hear 1.35v for 4.2ghz is very respectable however the temps still seem high (although you can't always trust other people's word on random forums)...

However if you are planning on changing coolers regardless then the NH-D14 is no doubt the best out there atm, the H70 or even the silverarrow dont come close at higher temps like yours (under lower temps they do perform quite similarly but thats not ur case)...so if you dont have clearance issues (aka ram not any taller than ripjaws/mushkins) you should give the ugly noctua a run!

my Titan Fiair is runninig bout 75 c in prime 95. cant prime more than 10 seconds. Cinbench is good though.

Well I came home from work, and took out the hitsink and re-applied some good thermal paste and instead of spreading it, for the first time I used the one line in the middle technique, put the fans back, clocked it to 4.2 and wow amazing, got to 82 degrees this time lol. I guess i dont need to clock it that high. I ran some prime 95 on stock at 3.2 and I get about 59 degrees peak after 15 minutes. I have given up.

I will buy a new heatsink,maybe noctua nh-d14. Check out this dude at 4.2m, hits max of 66

would a corsair H70 or H60 count as air cooling since there is not fiddling to get it to work? IMO, if you think this would work I would go for it. my understanding is that it is much better than just about any normal air cooling.

hr-o2 hands down. itll run fanless if you need to. r you can add a fan :)
